About Me
Dr Arup Chatterjee was born on July 14, 1980, into a family of music lovers and teachers of Hindustani classical music. He is a talented tabla player recognized as one of the promising artists of his generation. Hailing from Varanasi, the cultural capital of India, he had the privilege of learning tabla from Pt. Chhote Lal Mishra, a renowned exponent of the Banaras Gharana. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy with a focus on "Critical Analysis of the Gathas in the Banaras and Farrukhabad Gharanas." Dr Chatterjee is a rated artist on All India Radio, where he has earned a B high grade among many accolades. Dr. Arup Chatterjee has performed at numerous major venues and prestigious music festivals across the country, including the Lucknow Mahotsav in 2010 and Sangeet Sankalp in Allahabad in 2005. He has also been honoured to collaborate with prominent artists such as Pandit Narendra Dhar, the late Vidushi Purnima Chaudhary, Shashank Maktedar, Pt. Ankit Bhatt, Mr. Deepak Chatterjee, and Hrishikesh Gangurde.
He has received the prestigious Taal Mani Award, conferred by the Sur Singar Sansad Parishad in Mumbai. Additionally, he was awarded a state scholarship by the Cultural Department of Uttar Pradesh for the period from 1992 to 1994 and a Senior Fellowship from the Central for Cultural Resources and Training in New Delhi for the years 2020–2021.
Dr. Chatterjee has authored two books: "Tabla Vadan Mein Gat" and "Basics of Tabla," both of which are beneficial for students. With over 20 years of teaching experience, his students are excelling in music today.

Have taken classes for the last six weeks and found Aroop to be a very patient teacher. He is obviously well qualified in his craft and he exercises patience and diligence to teach a student like myself- a painfully slow learner. Dr. Aroop is an excellent tabla teacher. I am taking table lessons from Dr. Aroop for the past few weeks online. I am in the US and he is in Varanasi. He is well equipped with all the instruments and the electronics gadgets (camera, mic, online streaming accounts, etc) that are needed for online sessions. He starts with the basics and alters his lessons depending on the student's pace. He is very patient and encouraging and I feel like I'm progressing very quickly! He has a good style and we communicate in English and Hindi as well. He is incredibly efficient and responsive and I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to learn from him.
